The RV Technical Institute (RVTI)’s Level 2 training covers theoretical knowledge of all the systems and components within an RV, including propane, electrical, plumbing, appliances, body, generator, and chassis. A student who successfully completes the training will leave with a proven skill set to be able to perform basic diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on those systems and components.
Michael, an RVTI attendee from Mishawaka, IN, completed his Level 2 training in early February.
Michael highlighted his trainer’s proficiency as a standout element of his Level 2 experience. “I wanted to personally thank Instructor Tyson Watkins for an exceptional three weeks of in-person learning,” he says. “Three weeks is a short time in the scope of learning a tremendous amount of information, but a long time to keep us older adults' energy levels at high performance every day for three straight weeks!”
Michael notes that, although Level 2 was challenging, the steady pace and additional study time made it manageable. “Because I live locally, I had been informed by prior students that Level 2 was harder than Level 1, and to make sure I had done several weeks of pre-study as well as daily study throughout the course,” he says. “I felt Instructor Watkins did a great job of balancing the pace as well as the amount of daily information received each day.”
He adds that Instructor Watkins also created ample opportunities for course attendees to ask questions about the material. “Every single break and lunch, Instructor Watkins consistently made himself available for questions and to discuss anything we didn't understand,” Michael says. “I can't recall a day that he actually had a full break himself because we were a class of questions!”
Most importantly, the course provided Michael with a newfound sense of confidence in his technician skills: “Instructor Watkins challenged me to really think outside the box when it came to troubleshooting the various appliances and components. He challenged me day after day and said something that will stick with me for the rest of my life: ‘I don't just want to turn out average or below average technicians. I want to put outstanding technicians into the field.’ Instructor Watkins saw high potential in me before I recognized it.
“He pushed my confidence further than I thought I could go and pushed me outside of my comfort zone, taking me to new heights I didn't even know I could reach,” Michael continues. “That statement built a high level of self-motivation and drive for me to work even harder.”
Michael shared he had a rewarding Level 1 experience as well: “Instructor Mike Anderson was also exemplary, not only in training us through Level 1, but also in preparing us for Level 2 and the amount of pre-study needed before starting the Level 2 course.”
“Both trainers did an outstanding job of taking us from just average potential technicians to the best chance at being outstanding future technicians,” he concludes.
And Michael isn’t stopping now. He will be attending RVTI’s Level 3 Electrical specialty course at the end of March to continue along the RV technician career path.
